Charles Cushman

Associate Dean & Director, The Graduate School of Political Management
Professor – Fundamentals, American Government, National Security Policy, Public Policy

Charles B. Cushman, Jr. (B.S., US Military Academy; Ph.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) is Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Political Management at the George Washington University. He teaches fundamentals of political management, public policy, national security policy, and Congress and defense policy. He is a former Army officer who served as defense advisor to Rep. David Price (NC-04). He has been a lobbyist working to advance peace in the Middle East, and a consultant to the Defense Department, working on force structure, strategy, and space policy, including support work for the Space Commission chaired by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in 2000-2001.

Professor, Media, Government and Social Change in A Connected Society

Brian is the Managing Director of little m media. He provides strategic guidance and other support to organizations around the use of the internet and technology for communications, engagement, education, and mobilization. Brian is also the author of Media Rules!: Mastering Today’s Technology to Connect With and Keep Your Audience (Wiley 2007). He is the Director of Community and Partnerships for iFOCOS, the media think tank and futures lab that organizes the We Media community, conferences and awards and Managing Editor of WeMedia.com.

And, Brian is a regular writer and speaker on the issues involving the impact of the internet and technology on politics, society, and the media. He is the editor of Thinking About Media (www.thinkingaboutmedia.com) and contributes as a Fast Company Expert.

Brian was previously a Principal at EchoDitto, one of the most successful online communications agencies in the nation, Director of New Media for Cone Inc, a brand strategy and communications agency in Boston and was a Senior Strategic Consultant and Director of Boston Operations for Mindshare Interactive Campaigns, an interactive public affairs agency.From 2000 – 2004, Brian ran his own consulting business – Mouse Communications. Brian launched Mouse Communications after serving two years as Vice President Gore’s Briefing Director in the White House, handling both official activities and activities during his 2000 presidential campaign. Brian has spent much of his life working in and around politics, including helping to direct dozens of campaigns across the country.
Brian is on the Board of the Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences and the Humanities and serves as Vice Chair of the Cambridge Climate Protection Action Committee. Brian attended the University of Michigan and is a graduate of Columbia University. He and his wife, Karen Dahl, live in Cambridge, Massachusetts with their son, Henry.
